1204 Indian IT Employees Fired In 1st 15 Days Of 2024: 7000+ Employees Fired Globally By 1186 Tech Firms – Trak.in

The global technology industry is facing formidable headwinds in early 2024 as firms across geographies downsize workforces drastically amid a challenging macro environment. Recent data reveals over 7,500 employees have already lost jobs this year.

48 Tech Companies Initiate Layoffs Within 15 Days

Per statistics, 1,186 tech companies worldwide undertook layoffs impacting 262,582 employees in 2023 alone. Alarmingly, within just the first 15 days of 2024, 48 tech firms have fired around 7,528 staff indicating the trend is accelerating.

Leading companies like Google, Unity Technologies, Flipkart initiating workforce cuts is sending shockwaves across the sector. This presents a worrying scenario for both affected firms and displaced workers.

India Accounts for 16% of Global Tech Layoffs

India has remarkably contributed over 16% to worldwide technology industry layoffs so far this year. Domestic majors like Flipkart and Inmobi strategically restructured operations, letting go of 1,100 and 125 staff respectively in January itself.

The preemptive 5% workforce trimming by both companies signals cost optimization efforts and realignment with evolving industry dynamics.

Top Companies By Employee Layoffs in 2024

Among top tech employers worldwide, Google, Unity and Flipkart lead employee downsizing in 2024 having each fired over 1,000 staff amid various internal reorganizations.

Google officially acknowledged substantial job cuts already across divisions like search, hardware and AI. Analysts expect more reductions this year as Alphabet reins in costs.

Gaming tech provider Unity Technologies terminated about 25% or 1,800 of its employees worldwide to sharpen focus on core offerings and profitability per interim CEO.

As the once-high-flying technology sector confronts slowing growth and funding squeezes, workforce rationalization has become an unfortunate necessity. Proactive realignment by companies also empowers them to survive potential larger industry shakeouts ahead.
