Biden, Harris to meet US hostage deal negotiating team amid massive protests in Israel

President Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris plan to meet in the White House Situation Room on Monday with the US hostage negotiation team following the killing of six hostages. These include American citizen Hersh Goldberg-Polin. This attack was carried out by Hamas on Saturday.

The White House said the main purpose of the meeting was to discuss efforts to move toward an agreement to secure the release of the remaining hostages. The press is not allowed at the meeting.

Crowd Protesters took to the streets Violence erupted in Jerusalem, Tel Aviv and other cities on Sunday after the bodies of hostages in Gaza were returned to Israel, fueling frustration and anger at the country's leadership for failing to reach a ceasefire deal to free the remaining hostages.

Israeli media reported that crowds of protesters in major Israeli cities were estimated at up to 500,000. Many of the protesters demanded Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu do more to bring back the remaining 101 hostages.

Reuters reported that the Israeli leadership estimated that about a third of the remaining hostages were dead.

While the protests remained strong on Sunday, labour leaders have called on workers to join a one-day strike on Monday.

“We are getting corpses instead of a deal,” Arnon Bar-David, head of the Histadrut labor federation, told reporters on Sunday, according to Reuters. “We must reach an agreement. A deal is more important than anything else.”

The Histadrut Labor Federation is Israel's main labor union representing millions of workers. Bar-David's call for a one-day strike was supported by the country's manufacturers and tech entrepreneurs.

The Israeli military announced that the bodies of hostages Carmel Gat, 40, Hersh Goldberg-Polin, 23, Eden Yerushalmi, 24, Alexander Lobanov, 32, Almog Sarousi, 27, and Ori Danino, 25, were recovered from a tunnel in the southern Gaza city of Rafah.

A polio vaccination campaign had begun in the war-torn Gaza Strip, sparking violence in the occupied West Bank.

The bodies of six hostages have been returned to Israel, according to military spokesman Rear Admiral Daniel Hagari.

An Israeli Health Ministry spokesman said forensic analysis of the bodies showed the hostages had been killed 48 to 72 hours earlier “by Hamas terrorists with multiple gunshot wounds at close range.”

Upon learning the news, protesters blocked roads in Jerusalem and demonstrated outside Netanyahu's residence. In Tel Aviv, protesters blocked a main highway carrying flags bearing pictures of the slain hostages.

Police arrested nearly two dozen Israelis across the country during the protests, Reuters reports.

After the hostages' bodies were recovered, Netanyahu said in a statement that he was “deeply shocked” by the killings.

“Those who killed the kidnappers don't want a settlement. We are going through a difficult time. The whole country is heartbroken,” Netanyahu said.

“Along with all the citizens of Israel, I am deeply shocked by the horrific, brutal murder of our six kidnapped people.”

The war in the Middle East has been going on since October 7, when Hamas launched a series of attacks on Israel, which Israel soon declared war on. When the war began, it is estimated that 257 Israeli hostages were trapped in Gaza, and 101 hostages are still in Gaza. Of the remaining 101 hostages, 66 are estimated to be alive, four of whom are American citizens.
