The Olympics are over once again, as the closing ceremony took place in Paris on Sunday night (August 11). The event involved a number of celebrities and musicians performing as the torch was symbolically handed over to the mayor of the city of Los Angeles, CA, where the next summer Olympic Games are set to take place in four years.
A number of well-known musical artists with strong ties to Los Angeles showed up to entertain the crowd, both in France and watching at home. One of the stars who appeared, Billie Eilish, is feeling the positive effects of singing for such a massive crowd.
Eilish’s new single “Birds of a Feather” shot to No. 1 on iTunes in the U.S. following the singer’s performance. Before the event, the tune wasn’t even present inside the top 10 on the list of the best-selling songs in America on the platform, but as of Monday morning (August 12), it’s running the show.
“Birds of a Feather” replaces Shaboozey’s “A Bar Song (Tipsy)” at No. 1 on the U.S. iTunes ranking. That country crossover smash has been ruling the sales chart on and off for months, and it’s been one of the most consistent champions of 2024.
As it dominates the U.S. iTunes chart, “Birds of a Feather” is also the top-selling song in the world on Apple’s storefront. On the global list, Eilish’s cut only needed to climb a few spaces, as it had been performing better than in the U.S.
“Birds of a Feather” may already have sold well enough to rise on the Billboard charts next week, thanks to a surge in Olympics-related purchases. If the tune continues to sell in the coming hours, or perhaps even days, the cut could soar on the weekly rankings in a few days.
So far, “Birds of a Feather” has peaked at No. 9 on the Hot 100 in America. At the moment, it sits at No. 10 on the same tally, though its standing could improve again in a few hours when Billboard refreshes its rankings.
