A missing man was found dead in a Planet Fitness tanning bed on Monday, three days after he went to an Indianapolis gym, authorities and loved ones said.
According to reports, the body of 39-year-old Derek Sink was found around 9 a.m. — about four hours after the fitness center opened its doors for business.
A day earlier, Sink had been reported missing by his family, who had not heard from him since Friday. The Indianapolis Star reported, Citing police records.
A woman who went to the gym on Monday morning told WTHR Before the body was found in the tanning bed, a foul smell was coming from the building.
“I’m sure the tanning bed has a door, but still, why aren’t we concerned that the tanning bed has been locked for possibly three days?” Elizabeth Lane said.
The gym closes at 9pm on Fridays and is open from 7am to 7pm on Saturdays and Sundays. According to its website.
Cink’s family told the local station that their loved one struggled with drug problems and that there was a needle in the room at Planet Fitness.
An aunt reportedly said that an ankle monitor worn by Sink helped authorities track where he was.
His relatives remember him as a loving person.
“We are deeply saddened by the passing of one of our members and the franchise owners are working with local authorities in their investigation,” a representative for Planet Fitness said in a statement to the outlet.
“At Planet Fitness, we have strong operating brand protocols in place, as the safety and well-being of our members is our top priority. We are working closely with our local franchisees to ensure that they are maintaining those brand protocols.
The cause and manner of death have not yet been determined, but no foul play is suspected.
