This story is an example of creativity and technology meeting each other. According to recent reports, Chennai has come up with a creative use of technology to help commuters follow traffic rules more effectively.
Google Maps tag alerting Chennai drivers about police checkpoint goes viral
It all started when a Google Maps user marked a police checkpoint near Phoenix Mall, alerting motorists to the presence of law enforcement officers in the area.
The location tag read “Police Irupanga, Helmet Podhungo” which means “Police is there, wear helmet”, which served as a warning to drivers to follow traffic rules.
This innovative and creative approach to community awareness has instantly gained attention and praise after a screenshot of the location tag was shared on social media platform X. Soon, the post garnered over 260,000 views and generated a wave of amused and appreciative comments.
Chennai's Google Maps police warning a subject of humour and praise
There is a mix of humor as well as praise for the person's initiative. Many users expressed their approval of the warning, noting the accuracy and usefulness of the information. “In the US, FM radio stations announce the locations of highway patrol officers to alert drivers and reduce accidents.”
“Never lose faith in the kindness of strangers,” one user said.
Another user said that “this is a true social service”.
A user wrote, “Wearing a helmet is not to satisfy any traffic police or to comply with the Motor Vehicles Act. It is to protect your precious life. Chennai Traffic is trying its best to create awareness for safe roads in Chennai and let us help them in that.”
However, this is not the first time such an incident has happened. Earlier this month, a similar case came to light in which a Google Maps screenshot from Bengaluru city was shared on Twitter, showing a location tag that warned of the presence of police. Written in Kannada, the tag meant, “Police will be there, see and go.”
