Over the past year, Netflix has established itself as one of the best homes for Gundam. Most of the older anime have joined Netflix, and a brand new anime series set in the universe will launch in October 2024. A live-action movie was supposed to be coming, but while it’s still happening, it’s no longer on Netflix.

Before we look at the new details that have emerged Justin Kroll of DeadlineLet’s revisit Netflix’s history with live-action gundam Movies. We’re keeping our old guide live here, but we’ll go over the basic details.

Netflix first confirmed it was working with Legendary Entertainment on a live-action adaptation of the classic Japanese franchise in 2021. Announced as a project in 2018. Jordan Vogt-Roberts was on board to direct and produce and Brian K. Vaughn wrote the screenplay. The same production company behind Legendary Entertainment Pacific Rim And Godzilla,

Beyond that the only real information we got from Netflix was some concept art produced by ILM Art and a hint on several of its social media accounts.

Mid-last year, we also got rumors that Timothée Chalamet, who plays Kit and Cora, and Zendaya were being eyed to star in the film. At the time, Netflix declined to comment. We had heard that there were some plans to start production on the project in Ireland in 2024, but apparently, that didn’t happen.

Since then, the project has remained quiet until today (almost over a year later) sweet tooth Showrunner Jim Mickle is joining the project. The project is still very active at Legendary, possibly eyeing some sort of theatrical release. Meikle has been working with Netflix in recent years to adapt the DC comic series Sweet Tooth for Warner Bros. Television, with the series concluding with Season 3 this summer. Deadline notes, “The plot is currently under wraps, but the film is expected to begin production in early 2025.”

As is always the case with film development, especially when you’ve had a major leadership change on a Netflix film, things can slow down in development for years and lose momentum. You also have the case that priorities change, and a project that made sense a few years ago no longer does. As a general rule, if a project was announced 3-4 years ago or more and there’s been no buzz or news, assume it’s probably not happening.

As mentioned at the top of this article, Gundam still has a home on Netflix. In mid-2021, Netflix added some classic anime movies, and this year, in addition to Netflix original series Gundam: Requiem for VengeanceNetflix also launched SVOD mobile suit gundam seed freedom As well as two classic series.

Are you disappointed that Netflix isn’t moving forward with the Gundamman live-action? Are you happy it’s being made elsewhere now? Let us know in the comments.
