Kevin Costner’s ‘Horizon’ Ends Theater Run. How Much Did It Make?

Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter 1— Kevin Costner’s beleaguered Western epic—is officially done in theaters.

Horizon was released on June 28 and made $11 million in 3,334 venues in its opening weekend. After its disappointing debut, Horizon pivoted to digital streaming on July 16 where it was available for purchase and rental on premium video on demand while it continued to play in theaters.

The end of Horizon’s box office run was made official by The Numbers on Thursday when the movie was not listed on the box office tracker’s weekend’s domestic theater counts. Last weekend, per The Numbers, Horizon was only playing in 71 venues.

The Numbers said Horizon made $2,813 in theaters on Wednesday. In total, the film made $29 million during its North American theater run.

Combined with $2.4 million in international ticket sales, Horizon’s final worldwide box office tally will end up at $31.4 million since Thursday’s numbers—which are not yet available—will do little if anything to change the total.

How Much Did ‘Horizon: An American Saga’ Cost To Produce?

One uncertainty surrounding Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter 1 is how much the film’s actual production budget was.

The Numbers reported that Horizon 1 cost $50 million to make with Horizon 2 carrying a $50 million price tag as well.

The Hollywood Reporter, on the other hand, said the production budget of Horizon 1 was $100 million before prints and advertising costs. THR reported that Kevin Costner spent $38 million of his own money to partially finance Horizon and two private investors footed the rest of the bill.

While Horizon 1 trots off into the sunset, the fate of Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter 2 is still up in the air. On July 10, Costner’s production company and Horizon saga distributor New Line Cinema pulled Horizon 2 from its August 16 release date.

While Horizon 2’s release date is yet to be determined, the film will premiere at the Venice Film Festival on Sunday, September 7. A special screening of Horizon 1 will precede Horizon 2’s world premiere, Costner noted in the festival announcement.

Meanwhile, THR noted, that the former Yellowstone star has already begun production of Horizon 3.
