Far-right Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene privileged her long-held motion to House Speaker Mike Johnson on Wednesday, causing bipartisan uproar.
One day after making several demands of Johnson (R-La.), the Georgia congresswoman surprised colleagues by triggering the resolution to oust him that she had filed on April 22.
The motion must be voted on within two legislative days, meaning it will not be considered until next Tuesday at the earliest.
Those demands included cutting off further US aid funding for Ukraine, returning to individual government spending bills and defunding Justice Department prosecutions of former President Donald Trump, among others.
Greene rose in the packed House chamber to read her resolution on the motion to vacate into the record, listing Johnson’s perceived betrayals to the Republican conference — including pushing for US border security.
House Democrats scoffed and talked among themselves as she rattled off the grievances, as many Republicans also looked on in disapproval.
House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY) and his caucus leaders last week pledged to kill the motion if Greene called it up.
