Earlier this year, we got the news that Ancient Apocalypse will return for a second season on Netflix following Season 1's debut in late 2022. Now, Netflix has pulled back the curtain on those efforts, with Season 2 titled The Americas and set to debut globally on Netflix on October 16, 2024.
The second season comes almost two years after the first season, which topped Netflix's charts and became one of the most popular documentaries of the year. FlixpatrolThe show charted in the top 10 in over 65 countries.
The show's British writer and host, Graham Hancock, faced criticism for leading a petition to have the series aired on Netflix. Give the show a fictional nameSeveral people in the archaeological profession have questioned the claims made on the show. Following that petition, Hancock published a full rebuttal on his website,
We were the first to announce this Ancient Apocalypse Shooting for the second season began earlier this year, and work on the series will wrap up by the end of March 2023. Just a few weeks later, The Guardian confirmed the existence of a second season in their reporton July 1. He detailed some of the locations where he was planning on filming, and revealed that planned production at several American locations was ultimately abandoned.
A new sneak peek trailer and release date was released today on Netflix's social media accounts, showing Season 2 filming in New Mexico, Peru, and Brazil. Deadline first reported about the release date, writing, “Each episode examines new discoveries being made in the American Hemisphere, which until recently had been largely unexplored by archaeologists interested in the origins of humanity.”
“For those who don't know, I'm Graham Hancock. I've been researching the possibility of a lost prehistoric civilization for over 30 years,” the trailer begins, “Archaeology claims that if there was such a thing as a lost civilization, they would have discovered it already. I completely disagree.”
This then sets the stage for Season 2, with Hancock exploring ancient monuments across the American continent. The trailer also features a surprise cameo from Hollywood actor Keanu Reeves (The Matrix, John Wick), who talks to Hancock about how when he was a kid, the timeline of civilization didn't make sense.
