A man previously wanted in connection with the death of a professional welterweight boxer in the Bronx on New Year’s Eve 2006 was arrested Friday and charged with murder, the NYPD said.
Ahmet Gashi, 42, of Kosovo, Serbia, allegedly ran over 28-year-old award-winning Kemal Kolenovic with a Mitsubishi SUV outside a bar on Belmont Avenue in the Fordham section of the Bronx, according to police.
Kolenovic, who was from Montenegro, was killed after a bar fight between Gashi and two other men spread out on the streetThe police have said.
Police said the suspect jumped into the driver’s seat of his car and drove across the street to kill the people he was arguing with.
Instead, Kolenovic, who was not even involved in the altercation, was hit and thrown into a tree, breaking his head. He was later declared dead in a nearby hospital.
The driver of the car ran away and escaped the consequences of this heinous act.
