An Ohio parent whose child was coming home from school injured by other students slammed her son’s teacher on a Zoom call after she shared her concerns, according to a local report. Caught you.
According to the local ABC affiliate station, the mother requested to meet with her 6-year-old son’s teacher at Reynolds Elementary School in Toledo after she said he had come home saying he was allegedly beaten up by other students during class. After doing this he wanted to kill himself. 13 Action News reported.
“He was coming home with a bloody nose and multiple injuries. He came home and said that he was going to commit suicide. Just a lot of stuff,” he told the station.
But instead of being reassured, the concerned parents got a nasty backlash from the teacher and a special education administrator, who stayed on the scheduled Zoom call after the mom left the meeting, according to the outlet.
The parent, who was allowed to remain anonymous, was sent a recording and transcript of the entire call by the school district — including the six minutes he remained on the call after the teacher and administrator had logged off.
While the couple apparently believed it was a private conversation, the teacher allegedly called the 6-year-old “annoying” and admitted that half of her young students say they hate their lives, the news station reports. And call for suicide.
“He is troubling the Air Force. Not that I don’t condone it but I tried to tell mom that this is a behavior class. All these kids are here for a reason,” the teacher reportedly said.
The teacher also claimed that the child’s statements about killing himself were similar to those he had heard from other students in the special education class.
The teacher reportedly told the district administrator, “And him being hurt and wanting to kill himself is a learned behavior.” “You know my class. He screams all day long, ‘I hate my life.’ I hate my life. I will kill myself’ and this is what he learned here. Half my class says that all day,” the teacher said.
The little boy’s mother was shocked by what she heard.
“My 6 year old was saying he wanted to kill himself and it was not reported and he said it so calmly that it is a regular behavior in my classroom. This needs to be reported because children are taking their own lives every day,” the mother told Action News.
The teacher also reportedly talked about another student who was accused of beating up a parent’s child. The name of the accused student was removed.
“(Edited) Beat him up? Oh yes, (edited) is mean. Everyone always looks at (redacted) and like why is he in this class and I’m like (makes face)… They’re like why is he in that class with (redacted) because Like he’s tried to commit murder,” the teacher reportedly said, laughing. “He’ll chase you with his pencil.”
The Toledo School District has launched an investigation, according to the local station.
“Toledo Public Schools is working with the administration at Reynolds Elementary to address questionable comments made by two staff members following a parent meeting last Friday morning. The meeting was videotaped without informing those who attended, and the district sent a link to parents,” James Gantt, Esq. The Deputy Superintendent said in a statement to Action News.
“Toledo Public Schools holds its employees to the highest professional standards and will take additional and appropriate steps, including possible disciplinary action, following the holidays.”
While the hurt mother said she hoped the school would do something about what happened on the call, according to the outlet, she had already removed her son from the school.
