Onion Price Breach Rs 80/Kilo In Delhi, Mumbai: Prices At 5-Year High – Trak.in

Recently, onion prices have increased to ₹70-₹80 per kg in the wholesale markets of Delhi and Mumbai. This increase has surprised consumers, as onion is a staple food in Indian households. This rise, which comes after the recent range of ₹40-₹60 per kg, is a 5-year high for onion prices in November, causing financial stress to both consumers and sellers.

Reason behind price increase

The sudden rise in onion prices is due to several factors seasonal fluctuationsSupply chain issues, and increased demand. Vendors say prices are largely controlled by wholesale market rates. A vendor in Delhi commented that they buy onions from these markets, and any increase at the source inevitably affects the retail price. Additionally, with Maharashtra state elections approaching, some speculate that market conditions may be influenced by political dynamics.

Impact on consumers’ budgets and daily habits

For everyday consumers, these price increases are particularly challenging. Many families are forced to reevaluate their household budgets to accommodate the rising costs of essential commodities. Speaking to ANI, Faiza, a customer from Delhi, expressed disappointment over the price hike. “The price of onion has increased, whereas according to the season it should have decreased. This has affected the eating habits at our home,” he said.

In Mumbai, another consumer, Dr Khan, described the pressure on his budget, as purchasing 5 kg of onion now costs him ₹360. He said the rise in prices of essential commodities like onion and garlic was making it difficult to manage daily expenses.

Hope for price stabilization amid consumer concerns

Although consumers are upset with the ongoing price fluctuations, it is expected that the situation will stabilize soon. Some buyers compare the volatility of onion prices to stock market fluctuations and express hope that costs will decline in the near future. However, until prices go down, consumers continue to adjust their purchasing habits and purchase less.

As the onion market remains volatile, consumers, sellers and policy makers alike are closely watching the developments, with many calling for government intervention to provide relief on the essential commodity.
