Queen Elizabeth II’s final diary entry, written just two days before her death, has been revealed.
During her record-breaking 70-year reign, the beloved royal – who died in September 2022 aged 96 – kept a private diary to document major events throughout the years of her life.
He followed that tradition till his last days.
Royal biographer Robert Hardman discovered the Queen’s handwritten entries while researching updated chapters of his book about King Charles.
According to the author, the late monarch’s last entry was at Balmoral, where he died on 8 September, two days after meeting with Prime Minister Liz Truss, who was new to the role at the time.
In his diary he recorded that his private secretary Edward Young had visited him. He also wrote some important points about the swearing in of new members of the Privy Council.
Hardman wrote, “She appears to have been writing it at Balmoral even two days before her death.” “His final entry was as factual and insightful as ever.”
“It could have described a more ordinary working day, starting in the usual way – ‘Edward came to see me’ – as he noted the arrangements his private secretary, Sir Edward Young, had made for the swearing-in of new ministers. Truss administration,” he said.
The late queen’s journal recorded her activities rather than her thoughts and feelings, says Hardman.
Elizabeth once told the Society’s diarist Kenneth Rose, “I have no time to record conversations, only to record events.”
Queen Elizabeth II was not the only monarch who kept a handwritten journal during her long reign.
Queen Victoria, who died in 1901, wrote more than 60 million words in various diaries over nearly 70 years.
Elizabeth took inspiration from her father, King George V, who also kept a diary during his life.
Additionally, King Charles followed suit, says Hardman.
a senior courtier told The Telegraph Although the 75-year-old monarch “does not write great narrative diaries as before,” he does “write down his memories and reflections” of that day.
Nevertheless, the king’s writing style is “not as introspective, humorous and readable as the journal he kept as a prince.”
