A video released Monday by the North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD) depicted a tense moment when a Russian fighter jet flew dangerously close to a NORAD aircraft over the Alaska Air Defense Identification Zone (ADIZ) .
According to a statement sent by NORAD to Fox News Digital, “unprofessional aerial maneuvers directed at our NORAD F-16” occurred on September 23 while it was “conducting a routine professional interception of a Russian Tu-95 aircraft”.
NORAD, in A recent statementnoted that “the ADIZ begins where sovereign airspace ends and is a defined extension of international airspace that requires ready identification of all aircraft in the interest of national security.”
The video shows the moment an F-16 was approaching a Russian Tu-95 aircraft before a Russian Su-35 swooped in directly in front of the NORAD fighter jet, apparently surprising it.
Gen. Gregory Guillot, commander of North American Defense Command and U.S. Northern Command, condemned the dangerous behavior and said, “NORAD aircraft intercepted Russian military aircraft in the Alaska ADIZ in a safe and disciplined manner. The conduct of a Russian Su-35 was unsafe, unprofessional and put everyone in danger – not what you see in a professional air force.
NORAD, which consists of US and Canadian forces under a joint command, had earlier announced the presence of four Russian aircraft over the Alaska Air Defense Identification Zone (ADIZ) on September 23, 2024.
Although the initial release did not include footage or details of the dangerous incident, it noted that no Russian aircraft entered US or Canadian sovereign airspace.
“This Russian activity occurs routinely in the Alaska ADIZ and is not viewed as a threat,” the release said.
