After decades of wealth predictions, “The Simpsons” creator David Mirkin is revealing something the writers never imagined would actually come true.
“Yes, predicting that Donald Trump will be president is still one of the funniest predictions we’ve ever made,” the 69-year-old told The Post exclusively at the Vulture Festival.
But Mirkin also has an all-time favorite prediction that he wouldn’t mind taking over the Oval Office.
“I think Lisa is a great person to have as president,” he quipped, “and I still believe it will happen, so it’s something everyone can look forward to!”
Why do they come true so often? Well, Mirkin wants viewers to know that there’s a very secret reason for this.
“You know, it’s kind of a secret I don’t tell everyone,” the producer joked with a straight face. “But people ask, how do we do that, how do we predict… A lot of times in the writers’ room, time travelers come in, tell us things, just for show and to mess with people’s minds , and it works perfectly!”
And Mirkin made it clear that there would be no subject the writer would shy away from.
“We always try and pursue anything important,” he admitted. “People have a way of looking at things they care about with humor, compassion, empathy and incredible meanness at the same time.
“Everyone always has their own views, everyone has their own opinions and it’s all completely valid, except for the people who don’t like the show – they’re wrong!”
With 32 seasons to his name, having debuted with the animated series in Season 5 in 1992, Mirkin knows what keeps fans coming back for more.
“All of us on ‘The Simpsons’ have an incredible desire to keep making money, so I think it creates a tremendous energy that draws people in because our greed is so powerful,” the comic genius teased with a smile.
The producer said seriously, “It’s about a family and how families struggle and don’t do that well.” “So, everyone has a messed up family and they love ‘The Simpsons’ and everyone has a messed up family. So, again, very successful show!”
Moving forward? As Mirkin said, “We’d like to go to another 36 seasons, but the world won’t exist that long, so that’s the only sad (part). I mean our next prediction will be the end of the Earth, but you We’ll see – it’s getting closer!”
And for many young writers who dream of working on a sitcom like “The Simpsons,” the director has some good advice.
“Do something that actually pays better,” he quipped. “I feel very bad for young writers. It’s harder for me to come up now than ever. It’s tough now and there are a lot of writers who have to work outside the industry when they could actually be working on hit shows.
“The advice is you have to like it,” Mirkin said. “The way I got into it, I had no other option. I’m completely useless at anything other than this. So, if you find yourself completely useless at anything except writing comedy, this is how you get into it.
