Two exhausted skateboarders arrived in Times Square on Saturday – the end of an arduous 76-day journey across America.
A cheering crowd welcomed Jay VanPoerple and Orio Ramirez to the tourist attraction to celebrate the incredible achievement, which the pair dedicated to charity.
“Thank God!” Vanpoorple started shouting as supporters surrounded the pair.
“And we are no better than any of you. We all came out of the womb!”
Both VanPoerple and Ramirez have been skating since leaving from Los Angeles on Sept. 25 and 30 – often completing 20-mile days in all types of weather and terrain.
“Push to NYC” was brainstormed earlier this year as a passion project for the pair — both are lifelong skaters — but quickly expanded as a means of sharing their love of the sport. Have developed.
The pair – who have a combined 500,000 Instagram followers – took advantage of the thousands of people who were willing to follow their daily vlog posts about the trip. Raising funds along the way, 100% of the funds will go towards donating skateboards to children who cannot afford one.
Vanpoorple and Ramirez also took inspiration from Chad Caruso, who in 2023 set a world record for crossing the continent via skateboard in 57 days. The pair originally anticipated that their voyages would closely mirror Caruso’s, but quickly discovered that the feat would be far more difficult.
In recent weeks, the two have been caught in northwest storms and sub-zero temperatures.
At times, tired, the pair would stop for a while on the side of the road, and inevitably jump back on their boards to cover more miles.
He even had to replace his destroyed and broken wheels, which were worn out due to excessive use.
“I’m tired, I’m tired. I went through a lot of emotions. Cold and dark woods, cold and rain and snow and sleet and heat and everything, brother,” VanPoerple said just before heading ashore in the Big Apple.
“Thank you all for a wonderful trip. Thank you all for changing my life. Thank you so much for showing me – I’m just able to see the world, how beautiful it is and all that, brother. “I get to live here and skate all over the country.”
