While 2023 saw big-ticket U/A-rated films like Shah Rukh Khan’s Jawan and Pathaan entering the 1000-crore club at the global box office, movies with an A rating weren’t too far behind. From Prabhas starrer Salaar to Akshay Kumar’s OMG 2 and Adah Sharma’s The Kerala Story, these “adults only” certified films delivered commercially. However, another 2023 release is now India’s highest-grossing movie with an A rating…
Find out which 2023 blockbuster is India’s highest-grossing movie with an ‘A’ rating:
India’s highest-grossing movie with an A rating is… Animal! The Sandeep Reddy Vanga directorial has been at the center of controversies, especially due to its depiction of women. The movie became a box office mayhem when it was released in December 2023. According to Mint, the film featuring Ranbir Kapoor, Bobby Deol, Anil Kapoor, Rashmika Mandanna, and Tripti Dimri has crossed over a colossal Rs 900 crore at the global box office despite its A certification. It’s yet to be seen if Animal will become a Rs 1000 crore blockbuster.
Animal’s current domestic box office collection is a towering Rs 550.85 crore, according to Mint. According to DNA India, this is more than Pathaan’s domestic numbers, which stand at a staggering Rs 543 crore. In terms of overall box office numbers, Animal has also beaten Sunny Deol‘s film Gadar 2’s reported lifetime collection of Rs 691 crore.
In comparison, Salaar, which also has an A rating, has earned over a mammoth Rs 600 crore (and counting) at the worldwide box office, according to DNA India. Other A-rated films of 2023, namely OMG 2 and The Kerala Story earned reported lifetime collections of Rs 221 crore and over Rs 300 crore, respectively.
Interestingly, before Animal, another Sandeep Reddy Vanga directorial held the title of India’s highest-grossing film with an A rating — Shahid Kapoor and Kiara Advani’s Kabir Singh. The film’s lifetime collection stands at a massive Rs 379 crore, according to DNA India.
