Lopez spoke to The Post about the future of the HBO show at TheWrap’s 2024 Power Women Summit in Beverly Hills on Dec. 3.
“Well, what I can say is that it’s going to happen – oh my God! -There are going to be some important connections between what happens in Ennis, Alaska, and the characters in Ennis, Alaska, and what happens in the new [season],” Lopez revealed, referring to the small town where “Night Country” takes place.
“That said, it’s a new story, new characters, everything.”
“But…” she said with a playful pause, then added, “There’s a little joy for ‘Night Country’ fans.”
Lopez also confirmed that “Night Country” and the upcoming fifth season exist in the same universe as the first three installments of “True Detective.”
“That’s very important to me, and I worked a lot about that in ‘Night Country,’ to create the feeling that it’s the same universe; The events that happened in the first season, and the strange events that happened in the first season, add to the feeling that, ‘There’s something much bigger and deeper behind the scenes than we can imagine,'” she explained.
“And this is what is happening in [next] Season too. And it ties into the core idea of ’True Detective’, which is this dark truth behind the scenes of what we think is our reality.
When asked if it was fair to say we can expect some dark, weird things to happen next season, Lopez told The Post, “Absolutely. Very appropriate. Really crazy stuff.”
Discussing the way “Night Country” placed Indigenous stories at the center of Season 4, Lopez admitted that it was not something many fans of the series would have predicted.
He said, “The fun of the challenge was, you know, taking something that so many people loved so deeply and seeing how it could stay true to that spirit, but it also opened doors for different stories. ”
“And I think we survived it. The response was amazing because we got so much love and incredible ratings and a lot of love from critics.
