U2 drummer Larry Mullen Jr. says that counting bars within music is like “climbing Everest” for him due to dyscalculia.
The 63-year-old Irish musician revealed he cannot count or add due to learning difficulties, which affects his ability to use and acquire mathematical skills.
Mullen Jr., who recently realized he has dyscalculia, has produced and written the music for Left Behind, a new film about dyslexia and the New York school system.

“I always knew there was something not particularly right about the way I deal with numbers. I am numerically challenged. And I recently realized I have dyscalculia… so I can’t add, I can’t count,” he told Times Radio.
“I had to find ways to do it, and counting bars is like climbing Everest.
“And sometimes when people see me play, they say, ‘You look sad.’ I’m feeling sad because I’m trying to count the bars.
Mullen Jr. formed U2 in 1976 with singer Bono, guitarist The Edge and bassist Adam Clayton and Mullen.
He revealed that the band is currently writing new material and doing some preliminary recording and hopes to tour at some point in 2026.
“I don’t think it will be like we normally do. I’m hoping it’s something different”, said Mullen Jr. “But I’m excited to be back in some capacity.”
Earlier this year U2 held a residency in Las Vegas at the Sphere, a new high-tech immersive venue featuring 168,000 square feet of high-definition LEDs, 167,000 speakers and 17,000 seats.
