Borderlands—the movie adaptation of the hit video game series—is new in theaters. When is it coming to streaming?
Starring Cate Blanchett, Kevin Hart, Jamie Lee Curtis and the voice of Jack Black, Borderlands marks the second major Hollywood video game adaptation to come out in 2024 after the blockbuster Prime Video series Fallout.
The logline for Borderlands reads, “Lilith (Blanchett), an infamous bounty hunter with a mysterious past, reluctantly returns to her home, Pandora, the most chaotic planet in the galaxy. Her mission is to find the missing daughter of Atlas (Edgar Ramírez), the universe’s most powerful S.O.B.”
Joining Lilith for her mission are a mercenary, Roland (Hart), a scientist and archaeologist, Tannis (Curtis), a pre-teen demolition expert Tiny Tina (Ariana Greenblatt) and her bodyguard Krieg (Florian Munteanu). Black voices the crew’s wisecracking robot Claptrap.
Right now, the only way to see Borderlands is in theaters. The film plays in previews Thursday night before opening Friday in theaters nationwide.
Like every theatrical release, the first stop for a movie when it enters the home entertainment market is digital streaming via premium video on demand. For Lionsgate releases, the window from the date the studio’s film opens in theaters to its PVOD debut is typically a month.
For example, Lionsgate’s dystopian action-comedy Boy Kills World—starring Bill Skarsgård—opened in theaters on April 26 and debuted on PVOD on May 28.
However, another 2024 Lionsgate release, The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare, made a quicker trip to digital streaming. Starring Henry Cavill, Alan Ritchson and Eiza González, the movie opened in theaters on April 19 and debuted three weeks later on PVOD on May 10.
Given those two recent examples, fans can likely expect to purchase or rent Borderlands on PVOD anytime between August 30 and September 6.
When Will ‘Borderlands’ Come to Streaming Video On Demand?
After its PVOD run, Borderlands’ next stop will be a subscription streaming service.
STARZ’s streaming service will be the first destination for Borderlands, but if you want to watch it there you’re in for a wait. Typically, there’s about a 180-day window between the time a Lionsgate movie debuts in theaters and premieres on streaming video on demand on STARZ.
For example, the Lionsgate faith-based drama Ordinary Angels—starring Hilary Swank and Alan Ritchson—opened in theaters on February 23, but won’t start streaming on STARZ until August 20.
The Lionsgate horror movie Imaginary followed the same SVOD release pattern. The film opened in theaters on March 8 and will debut on STARZ on September 4.
As such, fans shouldn’t expect to be able to stream Borderlands on STARZ until sometime around February 8, 2025, if the movie SVOD debut date is a Friday.
