An Arizona family reunion turned tragic when 13 people — including three children who were hospitalized — had to be rescued from a hiking trail amid sweltering heat, according to a post on the Scottsdale Fire Department’s Facebook page.
The group of hikers, in town for a family reunion, hit the Gateway Loop Trail in Scottsdale, Arizona, at 7:30 a.m. on Friday.
An excessive heat warning was issued for the area as temperatures reached 108 degrees.
They got lost, ran out of water and called for assistance, Scottsdale Fire Capt. Dave Folio told ABC News.
Less than three hours later more than 65 firefighters were dispatched for a mountain rescue.
“The family was located off the trail in a wash under a tree several miles in the trail,” the fire department said.
A child, 10, was treated and taken to a local hospital for evaluation.
The kid was in “great condition” by Friday evening, Folio said.
Two toddlers — both 1 years old — were brought to a local hospital with “heat exhaustion symptoms,” per the fire department.
The crews used a “big-wheel” stretcher to remove a woman from the trail.
Everyone rescued was expected to survive, ABC Phoenix affiliate KNXV reported Friday.
