Nearly 30 people were injured, including one seriously, when a tour bus overturned on its way to Niagara Falls early Thursday — prompting first responders to close part of I-490.
The tour bus was traveling from New York City when it rolled over on I-490 in Chili, just outside Rochester. WROC reported,
The outlet said at least one of the 28 people hospitalized was a child, at least one of whom was in critical condition.
16 ambulances were called to the scene.
Monroe County Sheriff Todd Baxter said of the chaos, “It was surreal, it was stuff you trained for, but something you don’t expect to see in real life.”
Officials said that while the accident is being investigated as a criminal case, that does not mean there were criminal elements involved.
Deputies said the bus driver – who left New York City around midnight – is cooperating with the crash investigation, and there is no indication that drugs or alcohol were involved.

Governor Kathy Hochul said in a statement about the crash, “To allow first responders to do their work, I-490 is closed in both directions between Exits 4 and 3, and drivers are being advised to take alternate routes. are encouraged to explore.”
“I join the people of New York in praying for the well-being of all those involved in this serious incident and am deeply grateful for the heroic efforts of our first responders,” he said.
