India’s wedding season is expected to generate an estimated ₹6 lakh crore in economic activity from goods and services, according to the Confederation of All India Traders (CAIT). This surge is mainly due to wedding-related spending on jewellery, clothing, catering, venues and various services. In Delhi alone, around 4.5 lakh marriages are expected to take place, which will contribute ₹1.5 lakh crore to the local economy.
Retailers prepare for holiday economic upturn
With the season starting on November 12, 2024, retailers across India are preparing themselves for a high-demand period. CAIT’s recent study shows that the retail sector is on track to achieve total turnover ₹5.9 lakh crore in this festive seasonKey retail sectors including fashion, electronics and home decor are expected to post strong sales as consumers invest in wedding essentials.
Demand for gold increased amid wedding season
A lot of activity is being seen in jewelery shops also. Suvankar Sen, MD and CEO of Senco Gold, saw an increase in wedding-related gold purchases during Dhanteras. He said many consumers started shopping early to prepare for the wedding season, which will run from November 2024 to February 2025. The recent duty cut in August encouraged early shopping, increasing footfall and demand in stores.
Destination weddings gain popularity
Demand for destination weddings has increased significantly, especially with the easing of travel restrictions. Vaibhav Sadhwani, co-founder of Behind The Scenes Weddings, shared that more couples are choosing beautiful venues to celebrate their weddings, turning it into memorable holiday experiences for their guests. Domestic hotspots such as Rajasthan, Goa and Udaipur remain popular, while international destinations such as Thailand, Bali and Dubai are increasingly being favoured.
Outlook for the wedding season
This year’s wedding season highlights a strong economic growth with strong demand for both traditional and destination weddings. As retailers, jewelers and service providers prepare to meet this surge in consumer demand, India’s wedding season is set to bring a festive economic boom that supports various sectors across the country.
