The new year is coming, and even though Netflix is losing over 160 movies on January 1st, that doesn’t mean Netflix doesn’t have new movies to help fill the gaps. Below are our picks for the best new movies coming to Netflix in the first month of 2025.
Typically, we divide our list of must-watch movies into two parts: Netflix originals and movies licensed for the US. Sadly, since this month will be quiet for new original movies, we’ll be picking five licensed titles and only three original movies.

The Best New Licensed Movies on Netflix in January 2025
Interstellar (2014)

Never let it be said that Nicolas Cage can’t take a joke because this entire movie is largely at his expense. Directed by Tom Gormican, the buddy-comedy stars Cage as himself, who unknowingly becomes involved in a larger ongoing investigation when a superfan (who may be a criminal mastermind) arranges his appearance for his big birthday party. Rents.
It’s a great, thrilling, laugh-out-loud comedy that doesn’t take itself too seriously and has plenty of memorable moments.
80 for brady (2023)

Lion (2016)

Nominated for six Oscars and loved by critics and audiences alike is this upcoming biopic starring Dev Patel, which tells the remarkable true story of a five-year-old Indian boy who, 25 years after being adopted, Does a lot. To find his long lost family. This is another movie that will require you to have a tissue on hand, but the warmth you’ll get from the film is more than worth the price of admission.

One thing Netflix has been doing with its movie slate in recent years is to release movies of certain genres within certain patterns throughout the year. Its prize-fare comes in the latter three months; We get a new animated movie once a quarter and a big blockbuster right before Easter. We’ve already reviewed the film here on What’s on Netflix ahead of its Netflix release and given it a glowing review, calling it the best film both British animation and the geniuses at Aardman Animations have to offer. Our 4 star review Concluded, “Vengeance Most Foul’s greatest strength comes from Wallace and Gromit’s distinctive comedic style. With lots of memorable one-liners, it’s extremely hilarious from start to finish. In fact, I would go so far as to say that this is the funniest installment of Wallace & Gromit yet.”
number 24 (2025)
coming to netflix: January 1st
Our Final Pick is a Norwegian film that was released in theaters in late October 2024, but has now been picked up for global distribution by Netflix under a new name (in Norway it is titled Nr. 24). Set during World War II, the film details the true story of a young internee who puts his head above the roof following the Nazi invasion of his country to become the leader of an Oslo-based gang that attempts to disrupt the invasion. Did whatever they had to do.
It scored well across the board in its home country, and now it’ll be everyone’s turn to see director Jon Andreas Andersen’s new film starring August Wittgenstein, Ines Høystetter Eserson, and Lisa Löwen Kongsli.
