Adele has been accused of stealing her 2015 song “Millions of years ago.”
In an injunction filed Friday in Rio de Janeiro’s Sixth Commercial Court, Brazilian Judge Victor Torres ordered that the track be closed Adele’s “25” album A nationwide ban on streaming services and other global platforms should be imposed, according to Agence France Presse,
The order reportedly threatens the Brazilian subsidiaries of Adele’s label, Sony Music Entertainment and Universal Music, with a fine of $8,000 “per act of non-compliance”.
Judge Torres claimed that Adele’s song – which she co-wrote with music producer Greg Kurstin – was taken from Martinho da Villa’s samba classic “Mulheres”.
Toninho Garez, who wrote the Brazilian song, originally sued Adele, 36, for plagiarism in 2021.
In the injunction, Adele’s label was ordered to stop “immediately and globally using, reproducing, editing, distributing or commercializing” her song.
“International producers and artists who have Brazilian music ‘on their radar’ for possible parasitic use will think twice given this decision,” Gerres’ lawyer Fredimio Trotta told AFP.
Sony and Universal may reportedly appeal the order.
Adele’s “Million Years Ago” was previously accused of plagiarism by fans of late Kurdish singer Ahmet Kaya in 2015. He claimed that Adele’s song was a copy of Kaya 1985 song “Esilara Tutunmak”
However, there was never a legal battle over the claims.
The Post has contacted Adele’s rep for comment.
Adele releases her third studio album, “25 Million Years Ago”. The album spawned many of their most popular songs, including “Hello” and “When We Were Young”.
grammy award winner spoke with Graham Norton about what inspired “Million Years Ago” during his 2015 “Adele at the BBC” special.
“It’s kind of a story… I passed by Brockwell Park, which is a park in south London, where I used to live,” she said. board“This is where I spent a lot of my youth. It has so many memorable moments of my life that I have spent there, and I literally cried when I passed by there.”
“I really miss it, for no other reason than that we all have different things going on and it has nothing to do with me, I don’t feel like I belong there. Can’t go and sit down and have a bottle of cider… it’s a lot more that life happens, so I haven’t got anyone to meet there,” Adele continued.
“That’s basically it,” she continued. “And it’s just about that, and it’s about [how] I never realized this was going to happen. I never realized that when I was in the park with my guitar singing to my friends… We never in a million years thought this would ever happen.”
