From May to September 2024, a staggering 80 lakh traffic violations were spotted by AI-based enforcement cameras in Bengaluru. These cameras, installed at over 50 junctions, detected an average of 5,687 violations per hour, highlighting the city's growing road safety concerns. This data was shared during the 25th SAFE Annual Conference organized by the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM).
Top violations and peak hours
The AI-based cameras recorded an average of 57,942 violations daily, with the highest number of cases recorded during peak traffic hours between 8 am and 9 pm. Wrong-way driving was the most common violation, with 2,300 cases reported per day. Other common violations include running red lights, stop line violations, and failure to wear a helmet or seat belt.

Bengaluru traffic police also identified top 10 police stations informed Highest number of traffic violations. These include Basavanagudi, Halasura, Adugodi, Jayanagar and Mico Layout. With a comprehensive AI-based system, violators are instantly sent challans through the Smart Enforcement Centre, which monitors violations using sensors and advanced traffic technology.
Field Traffic Violation Report (FTVR) System
Apart from AI-based monitoring, Bengaluru Traffic Police recorded 1.43 crore traffic violations through Field Traffic Violation Report (FTVR) machines in 2024. The highest number of violations was recorded in January at 50 lakh. FTVR machines helped enforce contactless penalties, with an average of 67,335 violations recorded daily.

The city has also been struggling with road accidents in the last six years. Bengaluru saw 27,800 road accidents – both fatal and non-fatal – since 2018. This year alone, 497 fatal and 2,419 non-fatal accidents were recorded till July. The highest number of fatal accidents occurred in 2023 with 5,998 cases. Accident-prone areas include KR Pura, Yelahanka, Kamakshipalya, Peenya and Devanahalli airports.
