BIRMINGHAM, Alabama – Four people were killed and more than 20 were injured in a shooting in a nightlife area of Birmingham, Alabama, according to police and news reports.
The Birmingham Police Department said in a social media post that multiple people were shot on 20th Street near Magnolia Avenue in the Five Points South area.
Birmingham Police Officer Truman Fitzgerald said the shooting happened just after 11 p.m. in the 2000 block of Magnolia Avenue South, leaving 21 people injured. AL.COM reported,
Fitzgerald said “dozens of people were injured by gunshot wounds” and at least four people had “life-threatening” injuries, AL.com reported.
Birmingham Fire and Rescue Services pronounced three victims dead at the scene, and the fourth person was pronounced dead at the University of Alabama at Birmingham Hospital, AL.COM reported.
Police said the victims found dead at the spot included two men and a woman. WBMA-TV reported,
Other victims were transported to the hospital in private vehicles, police told WBMA.
Birmingham police did not immediately respond to an email from The Associated Press seeking additional information.
The Five Points South area of Birmingham has many entertainment venues, restaurants and bars and is often crowded on Saturday nights.
No arrests were made immediately, police said.
“We will do everything possible to make sure that whoever is responsible for attacking our people this morning is exposed, identified and apprehended,” Fitzgerald told WBMA.
