After years of development, a live-action adaptation of Avatar The Last Airbender blasts onto our screens in early 2024. After a strong showing, Netflix has The show's double-season renewal will take place on March 6, 2024, with the show set to conclude. Here's our September 2024 update, with everything we know about the upcoming season, including who will play Toph, where the series' story will go next, and most importantly, all the production updates and potential release date windows.

New showrunner for season 2 Avatar The Last Airbender
In April 2024, it was revealed that Albert Kim would step down as the series' showrunner and serve only in the capacity of executive producer for Season 2. Christine Boylan And Jabbar RaisaniThose who played a vital role in the first season will now take over the reins.
But PaleyFest LA 2024The Avatar: The Last Airbender panel discussed the showrunner change after it was announced, although Albert Kim was also present. When Kim was asked what he saw in the show's two new managers while making season 1 that gave him the confidence to hand over the reins, he said:
“(The show) is in the best hands. They were both very involved in the first season, very instrumental in making the season happen. I have a lot of confidence in what they're going to do. I know that Christine, who's here today with a group of our writers, they're working hard on the scripts for season two. I'm looking forward to seeing what they're going to do as much as anybody. I'm very, very confident and happy with the hands the show has been put in and the direction it's going.”

Aang to learn Water and Earth bending
After Katara becomes the new master of water-bending, Aang will learn everything he can about water-bending from her during his journey. This means he will have to seek out a master firebender or master earthbender to further develop his Avatar powers.
Naturally, Aang will think of learning Earthbending from Bumi, but Team Avatar doesn't know that Omashu has fallen to the Fire Nation. So unless they can rescue Bumi, Aang will have to look for a different Earthbending master. Fans of the cartoon will know that Aang will bump into Toph, aka the Blind Bandit and a master Earthbender.
Will Zuko betray Iroh?
Iroh has been a perfect father figure to Zuko so far, and the young firebender is slowly learning more about empathy and humility. However, will Zuko's resolve to capture Aang grow even stronger as he watches his sister's success from afar?
If capturing Aang means pushing his uncle aside, will Zuko take that chance?
Katara continues to master water-bending
Katara has proven that she is a master of water-bending and has already been recognized as a master of water-bending by Pakku. However, since Aang will be her first disciple, Katara still has a lot to learn in her journey. Expect to see even more incredible mastery of water-bending from Katara in Season 2.
Azula has already proven that the apple doesn't fall far from the tree by demonstrating her ambition and conquering the Earth Kingdom city of Omashu. The Earth Kingdom's last stronghold to stand up to the Fire Nation forces is the capital city, Ba Sing Se. Having proven her strategic prowess, Azula will keep Ba Sing Se firmly in her sights.
New locations and characters
We've already covered how Toph will appear in the upcoming season and we'll talk about the open casting call below, but there are many other characters and locations that could be explored in the upcoming season. We've discussed them in detail here, but as a quick overview:
New characters include Toph Beifong, Hama, Kuei, Long Feng, Combustion Man, Piandao, and Guru Pathik. New locations will include Ba Sing Se, The Swamp, Eastern Air Temple, Sun Warriors, and The Boiling Rock.

Who plays Toph in Avatar: The Last Airbender?
On June 11, 2024, we learned of the first big (and open) casting call for the upcoming season, which was for Toph, who is expected to have a major presence in the upcoming season. The open-casting call lists the characteristics they want from the person who will eventually play the character, encouraging those who “are blind or have low vision” to submit. They also describe the character: “She is bubbly, confident, and unassuming. For most of her life, her strength and formidable earth-bending skills have been suppressed, but now, having run into the Avatar's earth-bending master, she is desperate to become the fierce warrior she believes she is inside. Dance and/or martial arts experience is a plus.”
At Geeked Week, Netflix revealed that Mia Chaek will play the important role of Toph Beifong in season 2.Cheque appeared on the Netflix show. Rim of the World In addition to the roles American: Girl: Corinne Tan, The darkest mind, And Marvelous and black holesIn a statement to the press, Cheek said she has been training hard for the role and has experience in martial arts, in addition to being excited to represent her Chinese heritage.

As of September 2024, filming has not yet officially begun, although the show is in full pre-production, and all the cast members are in Vancouver for boot camp (training). Dallas Liu and Ian Ousley, who were at Geekdweek, confirmed this. According to the Fanbolt website“We've flown from Vancouver to Atlanta, Georgia, to do this. And we'll fly right back. We're doing boot camp right now. We're in preparation. We're embodying the characters through our arms, our souls, our hearts and our eyes.”
On September 25, Netflix shared a photo of the crew in Vancouver doing a table read for the upcoming second season:
When will the cameras actually start rolling? According to our information production will begin on October 7, 2024 (originally scheduled for mid-September), with the current planned completion date set at March 21, 2025.
This means season 2 Avatar The Last Airbender will be in production for 23 weeks and 4 days (~6 months) and will take breaks for major holidays in between. According to multiple reports, seasons 2 and 3 are expected to be filmed back-to-back, but with one notable change. You may have heard that Avatar The Last Airbender made full use of pioneering technology, sometimes referred to as a virtual sound stage or even Volume. Although this technology will be used in the future as well, according to the report Recommended by Night Edge Media In the upcoming season we'll see less of that in favor of “traditional real-life sets.”
When can we expect a second season? Avatar The Last Airbender On Netflix?
We are a year or two away from knowing the official release date of the second season. AtlUsing the production of the first season as a benchmark for the release of the second season, fans can expect to see ATLA return as late as 2026, but as late as 2025 at the most.
While this isn't a perfect comparison due to several filming restrictions on Season 1, that season did have a 27-month gap between the start of filming of the first season (November 16, 2021) and its subsequent release (February 22, 2024).
