The Eastern Connectivity Tunnel will help Bengaluru’s Kempegowda International Airport (KIA) by cutting down travel time for passengers from eastern parts of the city.
Travel time will be reduced by thirty minutes because of the tunnel, which will directly connect Whitefield, Sarjapur and Mahadevapura to the airport.
Bengaluru airport to get ₹16,500 crore eastern connectivity tunnel
The project is part of Bengaluru International Airport Limited’s (BIAL) ₹16,500 crore expansion plan to accommodate Bengaluru’s growing aviation needs.
By avoiding the highly congested Hebbal overpass, the tunnel will redirect about 30% of the traffic headed towards the airport and reduce traffic around the city.
To provide an important alternative route to commuters traveling via the Eastern State Highway, construction is scheduled to begin this year and be completed in three years.
Thanks to the Eastern Connectivity Tunnel, passenger traffic will improve and traffic jams will reduce.
BIAL CEO Hari Marar emphasized how the tunnel will increase traffic flow and provide quicker, more reliable access to the airport.
BIAL is working on additional tunnel
To meet the growing expectations of passengers, BIAL is also working on additional projects apart from the tunnel, such as development of Terminal 3, establishment of two new metro stations and modification of taxiways.
By 2030-32, the Kempegowda International Airport is expected to take over 85 million passengers annuallyMore than previous estimates.
Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar reiterated the state’s resolve to tackle Bengaluru’s traffic problems by implementing more comprehensive infrastructure initiatives.
Shivakumar announced that a major underground tunnel project would begin in the first half of 2025 that would ease traffic congestion around the city.
Bengaluru still faces traffic congestion despite metro operations, and the underground tunnel project is expected to prove to be a game-changer.
A key component of KIA’s development, the Eastern Connectivity Tunnel enhances efficiency and accessibility while supporting major initiatives to address Bengaluru’s notorious traffic problems.
These programs represent a major step forward in addressing the demands of Bengaluru’s growing economy and population.
