Are they still visiting Katz Delicatessen?
Billy Crystal reveals where his and Meg Ryan's beloved “When Harry Met Sally…” characters would be today.
The 76-year-old actor spoke to E!'s red carpet host Laverne Cox ahead of the 2024 Primetime Emmy Awards on Sunday.
“They may be talking about downsizing,” he said. “They're not ready for assisted living yet.”
“But they're still romantic, still in love,” he added.
One of the most famous and acclaimed romantic comedies of all time, “When Harry Met Sally…” tells the story of two friends who have a slow-burn romance that ends all slow-burn romances, ultimately ending up together 12 years after they first met.
And, even 35 years after the film was released, Crystal thinks Harry and Sally “would still be romantic” after all this time.
“They're probably spending quality time with their grandchildren and finding new ways to be with each other,” he said at the Emmy Awards.
Crystal also spoke about how he feels about being a part of a film that has remained so relevant and enduring to audiences over the years.
“It's extraordinary to be part of such a timeless (film) after all these years,” he said. “Young people are discovering it; film schools are calling and 22-year-olds are discovering the film; 21-year-olds, and coming up to them to talk about it.”
The actor credited the success of “When Harry Met Sally…” to the “brilliant direction” of Rob Reiner and the “brilliant screenplay” by acclaimed writer Nora Ephron, who died in 2012 at age 71.
Crystal also credited Ryan and late co-stars Bruno Kirby and Carrie Fisher. “It was a small but mighty group,” she said.
The “City Slickers” actor was honored at the 46th Kennedy Center Honors last December and paid tribute to Ryan. He explained People“We (Reiner and Efron) were thrown together, chosen to be this couple and you never know — almost 35 years later, we're still a couple to everyone.”
He further added, “As you go forward and the new generation sees this film and feels it and watches it again and again on Valentine's Day, New Year's Eve, whatever day it is,” he added. “You know, people fall in love every day, and every day people fall out of love.”
Crystal was at the Emmys a month before the debut of her new Apple TV+ series, “Before.” Crystal plays a widowed child psychologist in the thriller, which also stars Judith Light and Rosie Perez. “Before” premieres Oct. 25.
