Say no to this cup of joe.
Coffee is forever being tinkered with — from the old-school shot of anisette to the modern-day sprinkle of sea salt, generations of java jivers have not been shy about adding clever or creative flavors or mix-ins.
Now, a group of sadists in China appear to have crossed the caffeine line — plunging into the uncanny coffee valley — by proposing the addition of diced spring onion.
Known as the scallion latte trend, which reviewers at Yahoo Taiwan called a “dark taste,” the zesty garnish is “mashed” into a fixture of espresso and milk.
According to numerous reports, the addition is to add some crunch to the drink, as well as balance out the bitterness of the coffee beans.
Critics were eager to try it for themselves — one at Golden Brown Coffee, a roaster based in Australia, broadcast their personal tasting session, using freshly-chopped stalks.
“You can’t even fake any redeeming qualities,” the reviewer quipped. “That is horrific. Coffee down!”
Those who watched had opinions stronger than the bizarre flavor.
“i love green onions but this is too much,” one wrote.
“I thought that this was a gag!” added another.
The reviewer replied, wittily: “I gagged.”
An Instagrammer attempted a cup with their own spin on the recipe — they used red onions, which normally might appear on a quality cheeseburger.
“Uncomfortable,” he said, describing the taste.
