Blue Eye Samurai continues to run. One of Netflix's best animated series in its history has the potential to become one of its most decorated. Renewed for Season 2, the producers have given some insight in recent weeks into what we can expect.
The show's creators have been on an interview and promotional tour over the summer, since their show won six Annie Awards and two Emmy nominations earlier this year. Plus, they just finished their 2017 season with a new album, “The Last Days”. Three wins in Emmy juried categories last night. It won awards for Character Design (Brian Kessinger), Production Design (Toby Wilson) and Storyboards (Ryan O'Loughlin). We'll find out in mid-September if the show wins awards for Sound Editing or Best Animated Program at the Primetime Emmys.
There have been a lot of interviews, so we'll cover some of the big points and also discuss some other information below.
Grace Randolph spoke to three of the show's creators via her YouTube channel Beyond the Trailer to give some insight into where we're heading next, and also discuss the show's viewership figures.
“What Netflix shared with us is that we came out, and it wasn't a rocky start. People found it. And most shows on Netflix are very popular and then, find a trough, and we took over and built on that,” said Michael Green.
While keeping mum about the future, he confirmed that some old characters will return and plenty of new ones will appear in the new season, but stressed that “it's early days.”
When will Blue Eye Samurai Season 2 release on Netflix?
Perhaps the biggest question that most people have in mind is when will they get to see the second season. If you are familiar with animation, you know that projects don't just come to reality, but go through a long process from concept to script, design, animation, and finally to reach our screens. The long-lasting production period is often the reason why many Netflix shows get pre-orders for multiple seasons, and unless they do great, they don't come back for more seasons.

This was suggested in an interview on Netflix's YouTube channel towards the end It could take up to three years for the show to return, which could see it return in 2026.
In an interview Direct on 13 August 2024Michael Green provided the most detailed timeline of their current status, saying, “We've written more than half of the episodes (and) we're starting to produce the first two. Once we're done with one more interview, we'll look at some early storyboards for the first episode, and this isn't the first round that's come in.”

- Furthermore, Collider also asked about a spin-off, Green said, “We definitely have a concept for a spin-off that we've run by our executive at Netflix, Jermaine Turner, and he doesn't hate it, but it's not a commitment. I wish it would happen.

“I wish we could spoil everything for Season 2, but that didn't seem wise to do. I'm so grateful that the fans were able to take a shot at a show that was so impossible. One of the best compliments we got from people, especially from older viewers, was that we had no idea animation could do this. Guillermo del Toro says so well and so often that animation is cinema. So to be able to show that animation is cinema for all ages and all kinds of stories, and a great delivery system for emotion and character is very satisfying. Then the fact that the audience was willing to give us a chance. We're so grateful, and it was a wonderful surprise.”
