Candice Bergen sticks out her claws 2024 Primetime Emmy Awards,
The 78-year-old actress The Emmys Presentation on stage Award for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy SeriesShe won the honor five times for her role as the stern “FYI” newscaster Murphy Brown on the TV series of the same name.
Before handing over the trophy, Bergen took a dig at Republican vice presidential nominee J.D. Vance by referencing one of the most famous moments from “Murphy Brown.”
“For 11 years I had the privilege of playing the lead role in the comedy series Murphy Brown,” Bergen said.
“I was surrounded by talented and funny actors, I had the best scripts to work with, and in a classic moment, my character was attacked by Vice President Dan Quayle when Murphy became pregnant and decided to raise the baby as a single mother.”
“Oh, how far we've come,” Bergen joked. “Today, the Republican nominee for vice president would never attack a woman for having children,” he said, sounding sarcastic.
“So as they say, my work here is done. Meow!”
Of course, Bergen was referring to Vance’s now infamous comment About “childless cat ladies.”
In July 2021, Vance appeared on Fox News and told Tucker Carlson that America was being run by “a bunch of childless cat ladies who are unhappy with their lives and the choices they've made and so they want to make the rest of the country miserable too.”
Bergen was the second person to criticize Vance at the 2024 Emmy Awards.
Selena Gomez takes a dig The evening featured Donald Trump's vice presidential nominee at an event with her “Only Murders in the Building” co-stars Steve Martin and Martin Short.
“Steve, I just want to say what an honor it is to work with a guy who looks like he’s fallen over and can’t get up,” Short joked.
“And I want to say what an honor it is for me to be working with someone who looks so much like a former women's tennis champion,” Martin added.
Gomez delivered the final punchline. “And I want to say what an honor it is to work with two men who are far from being childless cat women,” the actress and singer joked.
Gomez and Bergen recently posted a video, following in the footsteps of Gomez's best friend Taylor Swift. Endorsed Kamala Harris for PresidentIn doing so she identified herself as a childless cat lady.
“I will be casting my vote for Kamala Harris and Tim Walz in the 2024 Presidential Election,” Swift captioned a photo of herself and one of her cats. He posted on Instagram,
“I'm voting for @kamalaharris because she fights for rights and causes I think need a warrior to carry them forward. I think she's a steady, talented leader and I believe we can achieve so much in this country if we lead with peace and not chaos. I'm so happy and impressed by her choice over my partner @timwalz who has stood up for LGBTQ+ rights, IVF and a woman's right to her own body for decades.”
“I've done my research and I've made my choice,” she said. “Your research is all yours and the choice is yours. I also want to say, especially to first-time voters: remember you have to be registered to vote! I also think it's really easy to vote early. I'll put links in my story to register and get early voting dates and information.”
She signed off as Taylor Swift, “childless cat lady.”
