A fearless cat who ran away from his owners in Yellowstone National Park has miraculously made the 1,000-mile journey back to his California home, just two months after he went missing.
Benny and Suzanne Anguiano were on a camping trip with their beloved house cat Rene Beau earlier this year when the cat got scared and ran into the bushes, the Salinas couple told KSBW,
The couple said they spent the rest of their trip searching for him in the Yellowstone wilderness, leaving out his favorite toys and items to lure him back.
But when there was no trace of the cat for several days, they considered it missing.
“We had to go without him,” Susan told the local station. “That was the hardest day because I felt like I was abandoning him.”
Sixty days later, back in Salinas, the Anguianos received a notification from the Pet Watch company with Rain Beau's microchip ID and location information.
Their cat somehow ended up at the local SPCA in Roseville, California — about 200 miles northeast of Salinas.
The couple was told that a woman in the area found him alone on the street, realized he was someone's pet, and handed him over.
He has no idea how he traveled the 800 miles from Yellowstone to Roseville.
When he finally reunited with Ren Buyu, he was not in good condition.
“He was really tired,” Susan said. “He probably didn't have much energy to even move.”
They hope someone who met Ren Beau during his long journey home will hear his story and contact him so they can get some clues about how he got back to California.
“Like 'we saw it here, we saw it there' or even that they assumed it was there,” Benny said.
All the “kittens” aside, Susanna urges all pet owners to get their pets microchipped.
“If that hadn't happened we would have never gotten him back,” he said.
