A Chicago teenager was blinded in one eye after a group of thugs allegedly targeted their victims with a “high-pressure” paintball gun during a Halloween attack on her street.
According to WLS, 19-year-old Vicki Murillo and her friend were chased by a strange car as they drove through the Clearing West community, when the vehicle made a U-turn and drove back toward the teens.
A crew of paintballers reportedly fired phones out of the car before spraying paintballs at the young women, injuring them multiple times.
“They were both on the floor, crying and screaming, with their hot chocolate next to them,” Vicky’s older brother, Adrian, told the outlet.
Before paramedics could take them to a local hospital, Murillo and her friend were left seriously injured and bleeding on the ground.
He was admitted to the emergency room, Adrian said, because a bullet hit him in the face and ruptured his eye. A GoFundMe Established for his sister.
Murillo underwent emergency eye surgery, but his vision has not yet returned and doctors are doubtful whether it will.
“Unfortunately, it’s very unlikely, and if any vision is restored in that eye, it will be extremely blurry,” Adrian told ABC Chicago.
Multiple surgeries are scheduled for the teenager’s injuries, including one Friday, but the family “will have to wait” on the results and remain “as optimistic as we can be.”
Murillo says he is disappointed by the senseless crime in his neighborhood after some of his neighbors came forward to reveal that they too were shot with paintballs on Halloween.
“It was crazy to me, because they were wearing pink, fluffy things. I don’t know who would target young women like this,” he said.
The random shooting occurred in the Clearing West community, about two miles west of Chicago Midway Airport.
Murillo’s family was told that two other people were involved in similar incidents in the city that same night.
Videos shared online show armed goons terrorizing the streets of several Chicagoland neighborhoods, including at least one man leaning out of a window and firing multiple paintball rounds at his unsuspecting victims.
According to the video, one clip showed the unidentified shooter firing multiple bullets at a man waiting at a bus stop as the victim attempted to escape from the powerful rounds. Acquired by CBS Chicago.
Increasing evidence from the video and similar descriptions of the car reported by neighbors led Adrian to believe that the attacks had malicious intent, leading to his sister being hospitalized.
“It was malicious. They knew what they were doing,” the protective brother told the outlet. “I mean, they went out that day specifically for that reason.
He added, “It’s the same car, same color, everything is the same.” “It means this person has been in the area for some time.”
Adrian says he is working with detectives to find the suspected shooter responsible for blinding his sister, with the hopes that felony charges will be filed against the suspect.
“We want it to be as charged as we can get it, because if not, it would be a slap on the wrist,” Murillo said.
