Chinese hackers tried to break into the cell phones of former President Donald Trump and vice presidential candidate JD Vance by compromising US telecommunications systems, national security sources told The New York Times.
The sophisticated hacking campaign targeted Verizon and may have gained access to data or messages sent by Trump, 78, and Vance, 40, sources familiar with it told the outlet.
Other current and former government officials also fell into the trap of Chinese hackers.
Trump and Vance were only briefed on the matter this week, though it is unclear how many communications – encrypted or unencrypted – were obtained by one of America’s main adversaries.
US security officials revealed the exact phone numbers targeted earlier this year after learning that Salt Typhoon, a China-linked hacking group, had infiltrated US telecommunications systems.
