Coney Island Cyclone roller coaster shut down indefinitely

The Coney Island Cyclone has been shut down indefinitely after a mid-ride malfunction left thrill-seekers stalled halfway up one of the iconic Brooklyn coaster’s hills, according to reports.

One of the 97-year-old wooden roller coaster’s trains was going up an incline Thursday morning when it suddenly stopped because of a malfunction — a crack on a chain, NBC New York reported.

Riders were eventually taken off the ride safely, the city Department of Buildings told the outlet.

No injuries were reported.

The train car has been stuck in place since the incident, with park officials saying the classic coaster will remain closed until a series of repairs are completed.

The DOB “inspected and cleared the ride to open on August 21, 2024” — as recently as a day before the mishap, said Luna Park, where the cycle is located, in an online post Saturday. “The Coney Island Cyclone is temporarily closed due to a mechanical problem that developed on August 22, 2024, and is currently undergoing repairs.

“We will reopen the Cyclone roller coaster when the repair is complete and the ride passes its DOB inspection,” the park added.

Luna Park was issued two violations as a result of the malfunction: one for failing to maintain the ride and the other for failing to notify the DOB of what happened, according to NBC.

Luna Park did not immediately respond to a Post request for comment Sunday.
