Since 1932, Danner has been making boots for the trail, work, and life. In that time, the Portland, Oregon-based company has earned a reputation for quality, comfort, timeless style, and innovation. But unlike some well-known brands, Danner isn't resting on its past. As a master of boot design, Danner is committed to using the latest technology and studies to bring the best fit to the market. That's why the brand spent years researching, testing, and manufacturing Exact Fit—a fit that perfectly matches women's footwear needs. To learn more about the Precision Fit and the hard work that went into its development, we spoke with Danner product line manager Pamela Low.
Outside: Why was it important to create a boot suitable for women?
Pamela Take: Everyone deserves to feel comfortable and supported with a shoe that fits them properly. Women's feet are not shaped the same as men's. And Danner's dedication to developing the perfect fit for women is helping to meet the need for a variety of options for comfortable walking on the trail, at work, in the backcountry or around town. Compared to Danner's standard fit boots, the new Precision Fit last—a foot-shaped mold used during footwear manufacturing—features a thinner heel, wider forefoot and lower height from toe to ankle to accommodate the biometrics of women's foot shapes.
What boot styles are available at Precision Fit?
The Precision Fit is available in three styles: Inquire (Mid and Chukka), Jag II and Sandy Ridge. Learn more about each style by clicking on the feature below.
What kind of research went into bringing Precision Fit into existence?
Danner worked for three years to bring Precision Fit to life. We conducted numerous fit clinics with women of various ages and backgrounds, worked with well-known last manufacturers in the footwear industry, and collected significant research and data about women's foot morphology. The information we collected helped us identify the root of women's discomfort in standard boot fits, which gave us direction for the new fit. Here are some of the things we learned:
The heel size in women's shoes is often too wide, causing friction and blisters.
The toe box in women's shoes is often too narrow, which can cause discomfort or injury.
🥾 Biometric foot data from over 40,000 women showed that women require a lower height from toes to ankle for optimal support.
How did Danner test Precision Fit styles during the design process?
We focused on the pressure points in best-selling women's boot styles, including our own, to identify the features and fit that were causing discomfort across the industry. With our in-house AETREX foot-scanning machine, we were able to capture the exact foot dimensions and precise pressure-point information of our fit testers. Armed with detailed information about women's foot needs and what was currently available on the market, we got to work. The Danner team went through multiple iterations of fit testing, using both qualitative and quantitative data to adjust the fit, before we achieved the desired result: a perfect fit.
What are the benefits of a better fitting boot?
Of course, the obvious benefit is comfort, but that's not all. Precision Fit also improves stability and support. You'll notice that your heel feels more secure and the width hugs your foot perfectly – no heel slippage or foot pinching. The fit accomplishes a locked-in feel while maintaining a roomy toe box. Whether you're hiking backcountry trails in Inquirer, working on the jobsite in Sandy Ridge, or walking to brunch in the Jag II, Precision Fit allows you to go about your day in a boot that feels like an extension of yourself.
Precision Fit will eventually reach all of Danner's different footwear categories, including our Hike, Work, Hunt, Military, Tactical, Lifestyle and Outdoor lines. We are excited to provide women with better-fitting shoes for all their needs and adventures, giving them the opportunity to go anywhere in comfort.
For nearly a century, Danner Danner has purposefully and honestly designed shoes to suit those who take the impossible, those who create new paths, those who are pioneers.
