It’s a bittersweet symphony.
The hit 1999 film “Cruel Intentions” is back with a revival show of the same name.
Premiering on Prime Video on Wednesday, November 21, “Cruel Intentions” is set in the world of fraternities and sororities at the fictional Manchester College in Washington, DC.
Shawn Patrick Thomas, 53, told The Post, “I was very excited to hear that (the reboot) was happening, whether I was involved in it or not, because it’s an amazing world that this story is based on.”
Thomas appeared in the film “Cruel Intentions”, and is the only original cast member who is also in the show – though in a different role.
Thomas recalled, “I had no idea that (the film) would be received the way it was. I knew it would be good, because the script was so good and because my classmates were so incredible… but I had no idea it would have this kind of staying power.
But, he said, when the film came out and grossed over $70 million on a $10 million budget and became a cult classic, he understood why it was a hit.
“It was something that people enjoyed, not only because it was bad people behaving badly, but because we created a whole world that people had never really seen in film before – including young people. Were acting like adults, with adult money and adult situations. There was something about it – for the time – that was very fresh and new.”
Both the show and the film are modern retellings of the 1782 novel, “Les Liaisons Dangereuses”.
The show’s college setting is a change from the film, which was set among wealthy high schoolers in New York City.
In the film, the cunning Catherine Merteuil (Sarah Michelle Gellar) conspires with her stepbrother Sebastian Valmont (Ryan Phillippe) to seduce her headmaster’s innocent and morally principled daughter Annette (Reese Witherspoon). Katherine also schemes against Cecil Caldwell (Selma Blair), who has an illicit flirtation with her music teacher Ronald (Thomas).
Thomas plays a different character in the show, Professor Hank Chadwick.
The show follows cruel step-siblings Caroline Merteuil (Sarah Catherine Hook) and Lucien Belmont (Sack Burgess), who have a plan for Lucien to woo Anne Grover (Savannah Lee Smith), the daughter of the Vice President of the United States. Who also studies in his college. ,
CeCe Carroway (Sarah Silva) is Caroline’s right-hand woman, who works closely with Professor Chadwick.
“I feel very fortunate that I got the chance to act with the veteran,” Silva told The Post, referring to Thomas.
“Because he is bringing the legend with him. There was just a sense of trust and security, because I knew he knew the world, and he’s a diverse and incredible actor.
Thomas, also known for “Save the Last Dance,” enjoyed playing both Ronald in the film and Professor Chadwick on the show.
“The character is much more complex in the sense that she is more mature. He is more experienced. “He’s not as innocent and naive as Ronald was in the movie,” he told the Post. “But at the same time, I also love the fact that Ronald was so innocent, and he was being acted upon by all these malevolent forces.”
Despite returning to the world of “Cruel Intentions”, Thomas has not spoken much to his former castmates.
“I’ve watched them over the years, I’ve watched Sarah (Michelle Gellar), I’ve watched Selma (Blair). So, I’ve seen him and talked to him, but I haven’t seen him since we finished it (the show),” he said.
“So I’m very curious about what they think. And I hope they see it.”
