A Texas law enforcement family man was arrested when his ship arrived in Florida after a woman accused him of raping her on the ship.
Juan Campos, 28, was arrested when the Royal Caribbean ship Freedom of the Seas stopped at Port Everglades over the weekend — just days after a 20-year-old woman alleged he attacked her during the Aug. 28 cruise. According to Local 10 News.
According to the arrest report obtained by the outlet, prosecutors alleged that when Campos penetrated her body with an unknown object against her will, she “pushed him and told him to stop and said it was hurting her.”
According to the report, she told police that Campos then pressured her to perform oral sex on him — and when that failed, he attempted to penetrate her again.
However, Campos' lawyer insisted the sex was consensual — and that his client stopped it when asked.
“It was a normal trip, he was with friends, he met some people on the ship and the next thing you know, he was charged with this crime,” attorney Ed Hoeg told Local 10.
“It appears they were joking around, it got a little further, when the woman said 'stop', when she verbally said 'stop' he stopped,” Hoeg said.
The attorney said Campos is originally from Houston and comes from a law enforcement family — all of whom are shocked by the rape allegations.
“The family says this guy has no criminal history, he's a good guy, he went on vacation and they're shocked by the charges,” Hoeg said.
Campos was taken off the ship at Port Everglades and is behind bars at the Broward County Main Jail, where a judge set his bond at $20,000.
The allegations come a day after a woman accused a Carnival crew member of raping her during a 2018 voyage. Over $12 million in prize money received from cruise line This decision was taken after a long legal battle.
Judge Kathleen Williams issued the ruling last week after the alleged victim alleged Carnival employee Freddy Engara forced her into a closet, closed the door and sexually assaulted her on the Carnival Miracle on Dec. 1, 2018, according to the complaint.
According to court documents, a jury had decided to award him $10 million in 2022, and after Carnival contested that decision, Williams added another $2 million.
Angara was never arrested in connection with the incident, nor is he listed as a defendant in the legal action.
