An angry customer shot and killed a Milwaukee store employee after he became upset over whether a cook was wearing gloves while making pizza, according to reports.
Gunman Charles Leggett, 38, opened fire on cashier Jamil Owais, 26, inside Action Food & Liquor around noon on Saturday, October 19. According to WISN 12.
Owais’ brother Mohammad Owais told the outlet that Leggett ordered the pizza, paid and then took his ticket and went to the back of the store, where another man prepared the pizza for him.
But Leggett went back to the cashier and began arguing over whether the cook was wearing gloves — Leggett believed he was not, the station said.
The network said Leggett pulled out a handgun, approached the counter and shot Jamil Owais once in the chest before running away.
The report said Jamil Owais – the father of a 6-month-old girl – was behind the counter of the store, which is owned by his family.
Leggett has been charged with first-degree negligent homicide – and Jamil Owais’s heartbroken family wonders why.
“He shot him in the heart and he died,” Mohammad Owais said Thursday.
“He is like my son. Like me, he came when he was a little boy, and he grew up near me… so this is hurting me a lot.’
Jamil Owais, who came to the US from the West Bank in 2013, was working for his brother that day while he was working, the network said.
Mohammad Owais said, “It is a big loss.” “He’s a good boy, he’s never hurt anyone. He is friendly with the entire neighborhood.”
Leggett, a convicted felon who was banned from possessing a gun, was being held on a $200,000 cash bond.
If found guilty, he could face up to 75 years in prison.
The station said customers were disappointed by the news and described the cashier as a kind, funny and helpful person.
According to the report, the pizza maker said it was all in vain – he was wearing gloves, after all.
