In August 2024, Joe Otterson for Variety announced that the show would not return for Season 2.
This cancellation comes after fans were overjoyed by a recent interview with Greg Berlanti that clearly hinted that more was on the way. Deadline posted the interview in mid-July and the interviewer suggested that the series had been renewed. Mike Fleming Jr. asked:
,You were so successful in the DC series game that we speculated that maybe you should take over after Walter Hamada left. Now James Gunn and Peter Safran rule the roost. near you Dead Boy Detectives ReturningBut have your superhero ambitions diminished?”
Given that the show ends on a cliffhanger, (spoiler) By showing Nico alive and well after 'dying', while holding the jewel given to her by the tragic Mick (Michael Beach), the show was definitely ready for a second season.
Early positive signs included the WGA profile of Steve Yockey and several others associated with the show, which at least indicated that some early development work had been done on Season 2. In several interviews, producers have suggested that more work may be on the way.
After all, as we'll explain later, the audience wasn't enough to warrant a second season. That's not to mention the cloud hanging over the head of the source material's creator.

Of course, those numbers alone don't mean much, so if we compare the first week to other Netflix Original shows (green ones are renewed, red ones are canceled, and yellow ones are pending), we can see that DBD is at the bottom end of the viewership table.
Entering the second week, we can start comparing it with other shows of the same genre, and we can see from this that the show is in a dangerous position, as it is ranking even lower than many cancelled shows. Lockwood & Co. was doing better than Dead Boy Detectives At this stage after its release, and the show is also suffering from other high-profile cancellations such as first kill And Warrior Nun season 2.

There's no limit to where we can take our characters and where we can develop them. So as long as Netflix has us, we're going to stay.”
