A fan-favorite character died in episode 12 of the show’s fifth and reportedly final season, one of the latest developments this season.

When Lloyd asks Rip if they’re out of business, Rip says he’s “trying to save the business.”

In Texas, news of John’s death is still breaking. Travis (show creator Taylor Sheridan) gets a call from Rip, who tells him the horrific news. Rip doesn’t have the courage to tell Jimmy (Jefferson White), a once-troubled young ranch hand who John saved by giving him a second chance.
So the responsibility falls on Travis, who tells Jimmy off and gives him a week off to grieve. A disappointed Jimmy says he will only take the weekend off because John wouldn’t want the young cowboy to lose his job because of him.
Meanwhile, Jamie is interviewed about Sarah’s death by Detective Dillard (Rory Cochrane), who is also investigating John’s death at Kay’s insistence.
Jamie told Dillard that he and Sarah were not in business together and that their relationship was entirely personal. After confirming that Sarah was staying with him, the police asked if they could collect her belongings – which makes Jamie nervous. After talking to Dillard, Kayce calls his former Navy SEAL friend Cade McPherson (Jake McLaughlin) and plans to pursue the hit man who killed his father.
Next we pick up lovable young Carter, who has been left alone to take care of the barn while the cowboys do their cowboy work. As he is performing his duties, Carter notices the wild horse that Lloyd warned Rip about.
Noticing that the horse has spilled his water bucket, Carter decides to go against orders – that he is not to enter a horse’s stall alone – and refills the bucket, telling the animal that he is there. Can’t stand by and let him die of thirst.
While he succeeds in retrieving the bucket, Bronk attacks him when he returns it. Trapped in the stall with no one around, Carter appears to be a wanderer – until Colby fortunately returns to the barn and intervenes to help the teen, just as he helps the horse. Rushes to push him back, instructing him to crawl. But the plan goes awry when the horse attacks Colby with even more force than Carter, kicking him repeatedly.
Carter manages to escape. But when Colby sees him being attacked, he runs, grabs a gun, and shoots the horse. However he is too late. Rip hears the gunshot and returns to the barn to find both Colby and the horse shaken and sobbing, dead next to Carter.
Although destroyed, Rip immediately calls Teeter to tell him that Colby is dead. She decides to go back to Yellowstone.
On the drive, fellow ranch hand Walker (Ryan Bingham) tells Teeter that Rip told him that Colby died quickly and was unharmed.
“He is a cowboy. To suffer is work,” replies a tearful Teeter. “I just wish he would have had to endure a little longer so I could say goodbye.”
Knowing that Carter will blame himself, Beth goes to console the boy. She finds him still in the barn, a mess, covered in blood and tears. She reassures him that Colby’s death is not her fault and says she is glad Colby saved her life. In an effort to keep Carter from blaming himself, Beth tells him that he can either honor Colby’s sacrifice or ruin it – “and it will be your fault.”
At the lodge, Rip is blaming himself for not getting rid of the horse sooner, which Beth helps him process by lighting a fire and giving him a glass of whiskey to throw into the flames in anger.
While all this might seem like enough to end an episode, “Yellowstone” doesn’t relent, as Kayce tracks down the hit-man who killed her father at the killer’s daughter’s soccer game.
After hiding in the shadows, Kayce gets into the back seat of the hit-man’s car as the father and daughter are leaving. Kayce points a gun at the little girl and tells her father’s killer to drive away.
Kayce threatens to kill the hired gun’s daughter and tells her to kill him, but instead Kayce tells her he is trading his family for the hitman. If the hit-man goes out of town, causing no further danger to the Dutton family, he will come to no harm to his family.
He then exits the car before jumping into a black SUV, where we meet Moe (Moses J. Brings Plenty), who asks Kayce if “there’s hope for a coup” before asking how it happened – A Native American word meaning to persuade an enemy to accept defeat without killing the enemy.
“I counted on a coup,” Kayce responded.
“Then he understands,” says Mo.
