Disney Plus Password Sharing Rules Explained

Disney Plus is one of the leading streaming platforms, but the company has recently digressed into following Netflix’s and other platform’s footsteps by adding sharing barriers. For those unaware, Netflix started disallowing password sharing back in 2023, preventing users from sharing accounts with people who don’t live under the same roof. Disney Plus followed soon, and you can no longer share an account with others. Here are all the Disney Plus password-sharing rules explained.

When is Disney Plus Password Sharing Ending?

The new restrictions on Disney Plus password sharing are already in action. If you reside in Canada, the US, or the UK, you can no longer share passwords with your friends. You can only watch content on different profiles when all of them are under the same roof. This restriction will soon expand to other countries.

The latest Disney Plus user agreement states, “Account sharing unless otherwise permitted by your Service Tier, you may not share your subscription outside your household”.

As stated in the agreement, a user cannot share their account with people other than the ones residing in the house where the user lives. For example, you could have the account on different devices of different people in your house but cannot give it to, say, your friend who stays a few blocks away from you. You’re good until people in your household are using the service.

How will it know if someone is in the same household?

It’s similar to Netflix. This means, Disney Plus may gather your IP address, device information, and location data to identify if your account is being used by someone else. If Disney finds out that your account is being accessed at a different location, it may restrict, suspend, or terminate your access to all Disney+ services.

How Can I Share My Account?

Currently, there’s no way you can share your account with your friends. Unlike Netflix, there’s no subscription tier where you can buy and add more users to be a part of your account. However, this could change soon once the account-sharing prohibitions make their way worldwide, or at least in popular regions. For now, it’s not possible to share your Disney Plus account with someone not living in your household.

Disney CEO says they’re exploring ways to make accounts more accessible and shareable with other people. The platform could potentially offer the ability to add members at extra cost, but no official announcement has been made about it.

Can You Watch Disney Plus When Traveling

We’re not sure about this, but considering how the password-sharing rules resemble Netflix’s, we’re guessing the process of watching your shows on Disney Plus when on vacation will be the similar. Netflix sends you a 7-day (14-day in some regions) access code when away from home, and Disney Plus could probably do the same.

And for those wondering about using the service with a VPN, Disney Plus doesn’t work with a VPN and instantly blocks IP addresses of VPN services.

What are your thoughts on Disney Plus and Netflix preventing subscribers from sharing passwords? Do you think it’s an ethical approach, or is the sole reason is companies want to benefit from it by forcing users to buy more subscriptions? Let us know in the comments below.
