President-elect Trump met with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte in Florida this week – as Europe waits to see what the incoming administration thinks about the war in Ukraine.
Farah Dakhallah, a spokeswoman for the transatlantic military alliance, said on Saturday that Rutte and Trump’s Friday Palm Beach meeting included discussions on a wide range of global security issues facing NATO.
No other details were provided on the session.
Root also met with Rep. Mike Waltz (R-Fla.), Trump’s pick as his national security adviser, as well as other members of Trump’s incoming national security team.
Waltz has previously expressed concern over US military aid to Ukraine and said Europe should increase its spending.
Rutte and Trump met as concerns grew that his second term as president could reduce support for Ukraine’s war effort.
During the campaign in February, Trump declared that if he were re-elected president he would encourage Russia to do “whatever they want to do.” Any NATO member that does not pay enough for defense.
However, allies remain cautiously optimistic that Trump will continue to support Ukraine and NATO.
Earlier this month, Root had congratulated Trump on his re-election.
He wrote on X on November 6 That the President-elect’s “leadership will again be critical in keeping our alliance strong. I look forward to working with him again to advance peace through strength through #NATO.”
