Doritos is living up to its “for the bold” tagline.
It’s one small step for snack-kind: PepsiCo is launching a special pack of “Zero Gravity” Doritos that are designed to be eaten in space, thereby allowing astronauts to snack amongst the stars.
“The limitless possibilities of space inspired us to push the boundaries of what’s possible,” Chris Bellinger, chief creative officer of PepsiCo Foods North America, said in a statement. “This mission is a testament to our commitment to delivering bold experiences and flavors, even in the most unexpected places.”
Dubbed the Cool Ranch Zero Gravity Doritos, this veritable Sputnick of snacks “swaps out the chips’ classic powdered topping for an oil-based coating” to keep the dust from floating about the cabin.
In addition, the chops are Minis — a bite-sized version of the regular chip — to mitigate the chances of pieces breaking off and contributing to the space junk-food issue, Food & Wine Magazine reported.
Couple that with their space-safe tin packaging, and Zero Gravity Doritos appear to be the perfect nosh for intergalactic snacking.
The rocket chips will debut on SpaceX’s Polaris Dawn mission aboard the SpaceX Dragon spacecraft later this month.
This campaign will see private astronauts perform the first-ever commercial spacewalk and reach an altitude above Earth that hasn’t been achieved by human spaceflight in over 50 years.
These interstellar adventurers will also become the first people to eat Doritos in space and presumably determine whether or not the flavors are out of this world.
Along with sating celestial chip hankerings, Doritos is donating $500,000 to St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital to help fund childhood cancer research and treatment.
Fortunately, you don’t have to be aboard the spaceship to sample this cosmic nosh.
Doritos is also releasing an Earthbound version that comes in a glow-in-dark tin to evoke space travel.
