Dream Home couple Brad and Mel’s decision sparks awkward ‘stalemate’

As the second round of Dream Home kicked off the couples were tasked to select their new rooms to tackle.

However, after a round of judging, they all had their “game faces” on and were much more willing to stand their ground, knowing the importance of the room allocations.

In Elle’s house in Watsonia, Victoria, the rooms were divided between Victorian couple Brad and Mel, New South Wales couple Lara and Peter and Queensland tradie brothers Rhys and Liam.

The room that no one wanted was the study.

In round one, Brad and Mel reduced the size available to the study to make a larger powder room.

However, the decision did not pay off, with the couple ending up at the bottom of the ladder board.

While the other pairs assumed that Brad and Mel would take on the study — considering they were the ones to shrink its size — they put up a fight.

“It’s not really a study anymore,” Rhys said in the negotiations.

The brothers stated that their talents would be wasted in the study because they are tilers.

“It’s been a good challenge for you then,” Mel quipped.

Mel explained to producers why they should not be taking the study, “Brad and I are at the bottom of the leaderboard and we got smashed – I don’t think we can deliver on a small space again.

“It worries us because we’re so new to all of this, it’s a huge feat.”

Lara later clarified that she and Peter are also reno rookies, calling their pushback “f****** bulls***”.

Mel told producers that it was “a bit of a stalemate in there”.

“Coming last was a bit of a reality check. We just can’t afford to have another small space,” she said.

After a tense conversation where no groups were willing to budge, Rhys and Liam made “the sacrifice”.

“We’ll take the hard one,” they stated.

“If we can win we’ll be having the competition shaking in their boots if we pull it off.”

Mel and Brad have since looked back on taking on the challenge of Dream Home and turning around these rooms on time.

“We don’t have any renovating experience and we didn’t even understand the basic design principles,” Mel told 7NEWS.com.au.

“A truckload of pressure comes from the tight timeframes when you have to turn everything around within seven to 10 days.

“We had to get really resourceful, ask really good questions and lean on the other contestants and ask for their opinions.”

She gave a shoutout to Rhys and Liam as well as Lara and Peter, sharing that “fortunately we had a really good bunch”.

Dream Home continues on Channel 7 and 7plus on Tuesday, June 4 at 7:30pm AEST.
