According to reports, a driver was hit and killed while getting out of his car to cross a Rhode Island highway, where people were seen scrambling for loose cash.
Kevin Elliot McCourt stopped his car on I-95 in Providence about 5:40 a.m. Wednesday and had already moved into the southbound lanes when he was fatally struck by a northbound Volkswagen SUV. WJAR reported,
The fatal accident occurred after civilians and police were filmed chasing flying dollar bills on the same highway, NBC News said.
However, police have not yet confirmed whether McCourt was murdered while trying to grab the loose cash. It is also not clear where the money came from.
Locals were shocked to see the money flying on the busy highway, but they were not surprised that people risked their lives to get it.
“I think this is crazy, is there more money to be found?” Sarah Walker of Providence told WJAR. “It is simply not advisable to get out of your car to snatch cash.”
“The economy is tough right now, free cash,” said Warwick resident Lauren Senechal Warwick. “Although I don’t blame anyone for bringing it up.”
Samuel Rea said: “It’s very sad to hear that someone has had to suffer because of all this.
“I hope whoever lost that money doesn’t need it too much and it’s really sad for that person’s family,” he said.
The crash caused lane closures for more than an hour, with a separate crash occurring southbound near Exit 36B, which also blocked lanes. Traffic reopened by 7 am
Police said there is no criminal case pending against the SUV driver. The crash remains under investigation.
The Post has contacted Rhode Island State Police for additional information.
