We’re entering the last full work week before Christmas, and if you’re getting an early start on holiday travel, you’ll want to be prepared for road and wind delays as a series of storm systems approach. Be prevalent in some parts of America.
The Fox Forecast Center said the Upper Midwest may be the only region that escaped major impact from the storms this week.
Other cities in the eastern part of the country should prepare for heavy rains and perhaps some wintry weather, which could put a brakes on holiday travel.
The upcoming work week will begin on Monday with a cold front spreading from the Great Lakes to the southern Plains and moving eastward before losing strength as it reaches the Northeast.
However, winter weather alerts are posted from the Great Lakes to the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast as rain, snow and perhaps some freezing rain is expected starting Sunday and continuing into Monday.
While snow is likely in the higher elevations of the interior Northeast and Mid-Atlantic, rain is likely near the busy Interstate 95 corridor, the Fox Forecast Center said.
Behind that system, a strong area of low pressure is expected to develop over the Tennessee Valley and bring a few inches of rain to parts of the lower Mississippi, Tennessee and Ohio valleys by mid-week.
After this the system will move towards the Mid-Atlantic and spread heavy rain in its path. The Fox Forecast Center said Wednesday also looks to be when the most significant impacts will be in that area as the system moves offshore and intensifies.
As that happens, cold air will fill back into parts of New England and the Northeast, perhaps leading to more snowfall in areas that have been hit hard by snow over the past few weeks.
After this a question remains.
The Fox Forecast Center said there are signs that a potentially impactful winter storm could develop and strike the East Coast, but details remain scarce. Computer forecast models indicate rainfall on the East Coast on Thursday and Friday, but details on that will come into focus in the coming days.
