Eggs recalled after multistate salmonella outbreak



Wisconsin health officials launched a recall of eggs after a Wisconsin farm infected 65 people in nine states with salmonella.

The people infected with salmonella include 42 people in Wisconsin, where the eggs are believed to have been sold, the Wisconsin Department of Health Services said in a statement Friday.

“The eggs were distributed through retail stores and food service distributors in Wisconsin, Illinois and Michigan,” the department said. “The recalled eggs include all types of eggs such as conventional cage-free, organic and non-GMO, carton sizes and containers with expiration dates marked 'Milo Poultry Farms' or 'Tony's Fresh Market.'

The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention confirmed in a statement on its website that 65 people in nine states have been infected with a variant of salmonella, of which 24 have been hospitalised and no deaths have been reported as of Friday.

These states include Wisconsin, Illinois, Michigan, Minnesota, Iowa, Virginia, Colorado, Utah and California, the agency said.

The CDC said the egg recall was conducted by Milos Poultry Farms LLC in Bonduel, Wisconsin.

The Wisconsin Department of Health said, “Anyone who purchased the recalled eggs is advised not to eat or cook with them and to throw them away. Restaurants should not sell or serve the recalled eggs.”

The department recommends that people who have consumed eggs and are experiencing symptoms should contact a health care provider.

Symptoms include diarrhoea lasting several days, abdominal pain, fever and vomiting, the statement said.

In July, the U.S. Department of Agriculture announced new measures to limit salmonella in poultry products.

The proposed directive included requiring poultry companies to keep salmonella levels below a certain limit and to test for the presence of six particularly sickening forms of the bacteria, three of which are found in turkeys and three in chicken.

The C.D.C. has confirmed that 65 people in nine states have been infected with a strain of salmonella, 24 of whom have been hospitalized and no deaths as of Friday.

Any detection of bacteria above the proposed standard would result in the sale of poultry being halted and the products subject to recall.

The CDC estimates that Salmonella causes 1.35 million infections each year, most of them through food, and about 420 deaths. The Department of Agriculture estimates that there are 125,000 infections from chicken and 43,000 from turkey each year.
